# AI Overviews and AI Mode (AEO), automated

What Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode cite, what Google says it needs, and how answer-shaped pages get quoted. Measured, sourced. We automate it.

## In short

- AI Overviews are the answers Google writes at the top of its results, and AI Mode is the same idea as a conversation. Google says nothing special is needed to appear in them: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
- They cost clicks. Pew found people clicked a result in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without. Ahrefs measured 34.5% lower click-through for the top result when an Overview showed.
- So the goal moves from the click to the mention. On our test questions an Overview showed every time, and it often cited pages that weren’t in the links under it.
- We make your pages the ones it quotes, and track it in Search Console. Start with a free Growth Check.

## How Google builds an Overview

Google’s own docs say AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics before answering. So a page can be cited for a sub-question it answers well, even if it doesn’t rank for the main search.

Our numbers back that. For “best Vanta alternatives” the Overview cited 8 pages and none of them was on the first page below it.

**1%** of visits to pages with an AI summary included a click on a link inside it (Pew Research Center).

## What Google says, and what it doesn’t

There are no extra requirements and no special markup: Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema to appear. A page has to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet.

The controls are the normal ones. nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google shows, including in AI features. Google-Extended doesn’t: it covers Gemini training and grounding and has no effect on Google Search. For Gemini itself, see [Gemini SEO](https://ignura.com/gemini-seo).

Traffic from AI features counts in Search Console’s Performance report under Web, and since June 2026 Google has added generative AI performance reports, rolled out worldwide by 31 August 2026.

## Answer-shaped pages

Put the answer in the first two sentences under a heading that asks the question. Then the detail: the options, prices with dates, who each one fits, the limits. A summary can lift a clear sentence; it can’t lift a vague one.

Keep facts checkable. Google’s guidance on helpful content asks who made a page, how and why. Pages that show their working are easier to trust, and easier to quote.

## The clicks you still get

Fewer people click, but the ones who do have read a summary that named you. We track them as their own segment: impressions where AI features show, and the visits and sign-ups that follow. In GA4, clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Organic Search.

## Mistakes we see

- **Blocking Google-Extended to leave Overviews.** It doesn’t do that. Overviews follow Googlebot and the snippet controls.
- **Adding “AI” markup.** Google says no special schema or AI file is needed. Spend the hours on the answer.
- **Judging by clicks alone.** With an Overview on the page fewer people click. Track impressions and mentions too, or good work looks like a loss.
- **Burying the answer.** An intro, a story, then the answer in paragraph six. Summaries quote pages that answer first.

## What our AI does

- Runs your buyer questions on Google every week and records whether an Overview shows and which pages it cites.
- Compares those pages with the links below them and with yours.
- Spots sub-questions the Overview answers from other sites that you could answer better.
- Pulls Search Console data into the weekly report.

## What we do

- Rewrite the pages that should be cited so the answer comes first.
- Add the facts an Overview needs: dated prices, comparisons, limits.
- Fix indexing and snippet settings that keep pages out.
- Tell you which questions are worth the work and which aren’t.

## The first four weeks

1. We run your 20 questions on Google, record every Overview and its sources, and check your pages are indexed and allowed to show snippets.
2. We rewrite your three most important pages so each answers its question in the first lines.
3. New pages go up for the sub-questions the Overviews answer from other sites.
4. We run the questions again and report Overview mentions next to your share of ChatGPT and Perplexity answers.

## The deal

Named in 5 of your 20 buyer questions by week 4, or you don’t pay the second half. $8,000 for four weeks, half to start. Then $4,000 a month, with a month’s notice to stop.

## Questions

### Can we opt out of AI Overviews?

Only by limiting snippets with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex, which also limits your normal results. Google-Extended doesn’t remove you. Most B2B companies are better off being quoted.

### Do Overviews show for B2B software questions?

On all four buyer questions we checked on 27 Oct 2026, yes. That’s a small sample, so we check your own questions before promising anything.

### Does schema markup help?

Google says no special schema is needed for AI features. Structured data still helps Google read a page and earns some rich results, so we add it where it’s true and useful.

### How do we see this traffic?

Search Console counts it in the Performance report under Web, and now has generative AI performance reports too. In GA4, clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode land in Organic Search.
