To show up in Google AI Overviews, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search, and your site has to be included in Google's Search generative AI features in Search Console. Inclusion is the default setting. Google says you need no special markup and no AI text files. Past that, it comes down to ordinary SEO and pages that answer the question and the follow-up questions Google searches for while it writes the Overview.

Google also says it doesn't guarantee that any page will be crawled, indexed or shown, so no one can promise you a spot.

## In short

- Google's requirements for a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode are that the page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that the site is included in Search generative AI features in Search Console, which is the default ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide)).
- Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear.
- AI Overviews may run several related searches across subtopics before answering, so a page can be linked for one part of a question.
- The settings that keep you out are noindex, nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and, site-wide, the Search generative AI control in Search Console. Google-Extended doesn't affect Google Search.
- Search Console now has a generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode, available to all sites since 31 August 2026.

## What Google says it needs

Google's page on [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) is the primary source here, and it is short. The main points:

- SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
- "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in these features, and there is no special schema.org markup for them.
- Google's [AI optimization guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) adds one site-wide condition: "a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible".

So if a page can already appear in normal results with a text snippet, and you haven't excluded the site in Search Console, it can be linked from an AI Overview. Whether it is depends on the question and on what else Google finds.

## How AI Overviews choose pages

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a technique it calls query fan-out. They run several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then build one answer. Because of that, they can link to a wider and more varied set of pages than the ten blue links do. Google also says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links can differ between them ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)).

Two things follow for you:

- A page can be linked for a sub-question it answers well, even if it doesn't rank for the main search.
- An Overview won't show for every search. Google says it shows AI Overviews when it judges they add something to classic results.

Our [AI Overviews page](https://ignura.com/ai-overviews) shows what we found when we compared the pages Overviews cited with the first page of results.

## Step 1: check that Google can use the page

Start with the boring part, because it decides everything else. Google's May 2025 guidance lists the technical checks ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/05/succeeding-in-ai-search)):

1. Googlebot isn't blocked in robots.txt or by your CDN or hosting setup.
2. The page returns HTTP status 200.
3. The page has indexable content.

Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to confirm a page is indexed. Then check your snippet settings. Google's robots meta tag documentation says nosnippet applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode and stops the page being used as a direct input for them, and max-snippet limits how much text they can use ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/robots-meta-tag)). A template that sets nosnippet on every page by mistake keeps you out.

Then check the [Search generative AI control](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16908024) in Search Console, under Settings > Search generative AI. Google rolled it out to all sites on 31 August 2026. It has three options: include (the default), exclude, and inherit from a parent property. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. Google says an exclusion generally takes a few days to apply, isn't used as a ranking signal for the rest of Search, and doesn't affect AI training. If someone on your team excluded the site, nothing else in this guide will get you linked.

Blocking Google-Extended won't help or hurt inclusion here. Google says it controls training for Gemini models and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, and doesn't affect inclusion in Google Search or act as a ranking signal ([Google](https://developers.google.com/crawling/docs/crawlers-fetchers/google-common-crawlers)). Overviews follow Googlebot. For the Gemini side, see [Gemini SEO](https://ignura.com/gemini-seo).

Our free [AI crawler checker](https://ignura.com/tools/ai-crawler-checker) shows the robots.txt line that decides Googlebot, Google-Extended and the other AI crawlers. [AI crawlers and robots.txt](https://ignura.com/blog/ai-crawlers-robots-txt) covers what each one does.

## Step 2: answer the question and the follow-ups

Google says people ask longer and more specific questions in AI search, and follow up with more questions. It recommends unique, non-commodity content that meets those needs ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/05/succeeding-in-ai-search)).

For a SaaS site, that means:

- **One question per page, answered first.** Put the answer in the first two sentences under a heading that matches the question. Details come after.
- **Cover the sub-questions.** List what a buyer asks next: price, setup time, integrations, limits, alternatives. Answer each one on the page or link to the page that does. Query fan-out searches for exactly these.
- **Say what only you know.** Your own setup steps, your real limits, the cases where your product is the wrong choice. A page that repeats what ten others say gives Google no reason to pick it.
- **Keep it in text.** Google lists making important content available in text form among its best practices. Facts that only exist in a screenshot are hard to quote.

[SEO for SaaS startups](https://ignura.com/blog/seo-for-saas-startups) covers how to pick the questions, and [how to get cited in AI answers](https://ignura.com/blog/how-to-get-cited-in-ai-answers) covers page structure for every AI tool, not only Google's.

## Step 3: get the technical basics right

Google's AI features page lists the same practices it gives for regular Search ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)):

- Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting rules.
- Make pages easy to find through internal links.
- Give people a good page experience.
- Support text with good images and video where they help.
- Make sure structured data matches the visible text on the page.

If you run Next.js, [Next.js technical SEO](https://ignura.com/blog/nextjs-technical-seo) goes through rendering, metadata and sitemaps. Our [technical SEO](https://ignura.com/technical-seo) page lists what we check.

## Step 4: measure it in Search Console

AI Overview traffic is included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). In June 2026 Google announced generative AI performance reports, and as of 31 August 2026 they are available to all websites. They show impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with pages, countries, devices and dates ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/06/gen-ai-performance-reports)).

How Search Console counts AI Overviews ([Google](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7042828)):

- **Position.** An AI Overview takes one position in the results, and every link inside it gets that same position.
- **Impression.** Normal impression rules apply, so a link hidden in a collapsed part of the Overview counts only once someone expands it.
- **Click.** A click on a link to your page inside the Overview counts as a click.

In Google Analytics, visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Organic Search, not as the AI Assistant channel ([Google](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9756891)). Google also suggests judging AI search by conversions and other value, not clicks alone ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/05/succeeding-in-ai-search)). [How to track AI visibility](https://ignura.com/blog/how-to-track-ai-visibility) shows how to put this next to ChatGPT and Perplexity.

## What doesn't help with Google

- **AI-only markup or files.** Google says none are needed. llms.txt can help other AI agents read your site, and [what is llms.txt](https://ignura.com/blog/what-is-llms-txt) explains where it's useful, but it isn't a Google requirement. Our free [llms.txt generator](https://ignura.com/tools/llms-txt-generator) builds one in a few minutes if you want it for those agents.
- **Structured data that says more than the page.** Google says it must match the visible text.
- **Blocking Google-Extended to leave Overviews.** It doesn't remove you. The Search generative AI control and the snippet controls above do.

## FAQ

### Do I need schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup for its AI features. Structured data is still useful for regular results, as long as it matches what's on the page. [Schema markup for SaaS sites](https://ignura.com/blog/schema-markup-for-saas) covers which types to add.

### Does llms.txt help with AI Overviews?

Google says you don't need to create AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If you add llms.txt, add it for other AI agents.

### Why isn't my page in the AI Overview when it ranks on page one?

Overviews may run several related searches and can use different models, so the links come from a wider set of pages than the results below. Google may also not show an Overview at all for that search. Check whether your page answers the sub-questions directly.

### Can I stop Google using my pages in AI Overviews?

Yes. The Search generative AI control in Search Console excludes your whole site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's AI features without changing regular results. Page-level controls like nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex also work, but they limit regular results too. Google-Extended doesn't remove you from AI Overviews.

### How long does a change take to show up?

Google has to recrawl the page first. Google says that can take from several days to several months, and that you can request a recrawl in Search Console.

### How do I see AI Overview clicks in Google Analytics?

They're counted in the Organic Search channel, together with regular Google results. Search Console's generative AI performance report shows the impressions, by page.
