App Store character counter
The App Store gives you 30 characters for the app name and subtitle and 100 bytes for keywords. Google Play gives you 30 for the title and 80 for the short description. Type yours below and see what fits, and what’s wasted.
30 characters left
Searchable, and the first thing people read. App Store Connect won’t save more than 30.
30 characters left
Shows under the name in search, and Apple searches it too.
100 bytes left
Hidden from people, read by search. Commas between words, no spaces. Counted in bytes, so accented letters and emoji take more room.
170 characters left
Sits above the description. You can change it any time without a new version.
4,000 characters left
Only the first few lines show before people tap “more”, so put the point up top.
30 characters left
Searchable. Google’s policy doesn’t allow words like “best”, “top”, “#1” or “free” here.
80 characters left
The line people see near the top of your listing.
4,000 characters left
Google reads it for search, so use the words people would type, naturally.

Questions
What are the App Store and Google Play character limits?
On the App Store: app name 30 characters, subtitle 30, keyword field 100 bytes, promotional text 170 and description 4,000. On Google Play: title 30 characters, short description 80 and full description 4,000.
Why is the keyword field counted in bytes?
Apple caps it at 100 bytes, not 100 characters. Plain English letters, numbers and commas take one byte each. Accented letters like é take two, most Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters take three, and emoji take four. So the same words can fit in English and not fit in another language.
Should keywords repeat words from my name or subtitle?
No. Apple already searches your name and subtitle, so repeating their words in the keyword field spends bytes on nothing. The same goes for a word listed twice and for spaces after commas. Singular and plural forms are often matched to each other too, so one form usually does the job.
Can I change my App Store text without a new version?
Only the promotional text. You can edit it whenever you like and it goes live without review. The name, subtitle, keywords and description change when you submit a new version of the app.
Is my text saved anywhere?
Only in this browser. What you type stays in local storage on your device so it’s there when you come back. Nothing is sent to us, so another browser or a cleared cache starts empty.
