What it checks

The limits come from Product Hunt and X. The rest are our rules of thumb.

WhereLimitThe checks
Product Hunt name40 charactersJust the name, with no tagline tucked in after a dash or colon.
Product Hunt tagline60 charactersDoesn’t start with the name or filler like “a new way to”. Says who it’s for and what they can do. No buzzwords or vague words, no exclamation marks, one emoji at most.
X post280 charactersEvery link counts as 23, emoji as 2. Names the product, has one link at the end, two hashtags at most, no buzzwords and no shouting.

Questions

How long can a Product Hunt tagline be?

60 characters, and the product name can be up to 40. The tagline sits right under the name, so it doesn’t need to repeat it. Product Hunt can change its form, so check the counts when you submit.

How does X count characters in a post?

A post can be 280 characters. Every link counts as 23, however long it is, because X shortens it. Emoji and characters from many non-Latin scripts, like Chinese or Japanese, count as 2. The checker counts the same way, so its number should match what X shows.

Which words should I cut from a tagline?

Words every launch uses, like revolutionary, seamless, AI-powered, game-changing or next-gen, and fuzzy ones like solution or platform. Swap them for what the product does and who it’s for, like “Split rent and bills for housemates”. These are our rules of thumb, not Product Hunt’s.

Where should the link go in a launch post?

At the end, on its own line. Open with the line that makes people care, then give them one link to tap. Two links split the click, and a link up front pushes the reason to click out of view. This is our rule of thumb, not X’s.

Is anything I type saved or sent?

No. The checks run in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and nothing is kept when you leave the page.
