How long can a Product Hunt tagline be? Plus how X counts your launch post
the short version
- Third-party launch guides put the Product Hunt tagline at 60 characters and the product name at 40. Product Hunt’s own docs don’t publish these numbers, so check the counter on the form when you submit.
- An X post gets 280 characters. Every link counts as 23, and emoji and many non-Latin characters count as 2.
- Spend the tagline on who it’s for and what they can do. Skip filler and buzzwords.

Third-party launch guides put a Product Hunt tagline at 60 characters and the product name at 40. An X post can be 280 characters, and every link counts as 23 however long the URL is, while emoji and many non-Latin characters count as 2.
The free launch tagline checker counts all three the same way and gives you plain fixes as you type, with a preview of how the tagline and post will read.
Where the numbers come from
The 60 and 40 character limits come from third-party launch guides and what makers report seeing on the submission form. They aren’t written down in official Product Hunt documentation, and Product Hunt can change its form at any time. Treat 60 and 40 as the working limits, and trust the counter on the form itself when you submit.
X’s limits are official. X documents its counting rules in its developer docs on counting characters.
| Where | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Product Hunt name | 40 characters | Third-party guides |
| Product Hunt tagline | 60 characters | Third-party guides |
| X post | 280 characters (links count as 23, emoji as 2) | X developer docs |
Writing a tagline that fits in 60 characters
Sixty characters is roughly one short sentence. The tagline sits right under the product name, so don’t spend characters repeating it. A few rules of thumb we use (ours, not Product Hunt’s):
- Say who it’s for and what they can do. “Split rent and bills for housemates” beats “The future of shared finances”.
- Skip the opening filler. “A new way to…” and “The easiest way to…” eat a fifth of your space before you’ve said anything.
- Cut the buzzwords. Revolutionary, seamless, AI-powered, game-changing, next-gen. Same for fuzzy nouns like solution and platform.
- No exclamation marks, one emoji at most.
The checker flags each of these as you type. For the rest of the page (gallery, maker comment, schedule), see how to launch an app on Product Hunt.
Keep the name just the name
The name field is for the product name, not a name plus tagline tucked in after a dash or colon. You have a separate field for the tagline. Putting both in the name makes the listing look cramped and repeats itself.
How X counts your launch post
X gives you 280 characters, but it doesn’t count them the way a word processor does:
- Every link is 23 characters, because X wraps it in its own short link. A long URL costs the same as a short one.
- Emoji count as 2.
- Characters from many non-Latin scripts, like Chinese or Japanese, count as 2.
So a post that your notes app says is 270 characters might be over the limit on X, or comfortably under. The checker follows X’s counting rules, so its number should match what X shows you.
Where the link should go
Put one link at the end, on its own line. Open with the line that makes people care, then give them one thing to tap. Two links split the click, and a link up front pushes the reason to click out of view. Again, that’s our rule of thumb, not X’s.
The checker also looks for the product name being mentioned, at most two hashtags, and no shouting in all caps.
FAQ
Can I go over 60 characters on Product Hunt?
Write to 60. It’s the limit guides report, and a shorter tagline reads better on the card anyway. If the form’s counter shows something different on the day, the form wins.
Does the tagline need the product category?
It helps if it’s not obvious from the name. “for housemates” or “for indie devs” does a lot of work in few characters.
Is anything I type saved or sent?
No. The checks run in your browser, and nothing is kept when you leave.
Where do the limits come from?
The X limits come from X’s developer docs. The Product Hunt limits come from third-party guides, not official Product Hunt documentation. The style checks are our own rules of thumb.
