In short

Not landing pages. Docs that answer.

For a devtool, search runs through docs and the answers coding assistants give.

How a devtool gets found

A developer asks Google or a coding assistant how to do something. The engine reads the docs it can reach and names the tools on them.
  1. The question

  2. Your docs

If crawlers can't read your docs, or no page answers the question, the answer names someone else.

  3. The answer

  4. The sign-up

Which one sounds like yours?

What founders bring us: We serve them as HTML crawlers can read. We track the questions and fix the pages. One canonical page per topic. One page per framework, with working code. We write fair comparison pages. We give AI assistants their own channel.

Why docs are the main search surface

A developer weighing a tool reads the docs before the homepage. The questions they type are specific: how to authenticate, how to deploy, how one tool compares to another. Docs pages answer those questions, so docs pages are the ones that can show up for them.

More of those questions now go to AI. In the 2026 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, coding assistants and agents were the most common use of AI (66% of respondents), and 59% said they use AI to answer straightforward technical questions. An assistant that searches the web answers from the pages it can fetch, and for a devtool those are mostly docs.

Docs SEO basics

  1. One URL per version. Give each docs version its own path, such as /docs/v2/. Where an old version repeats the current page almost word for word, point its canonical at the current page so search shows the version people should use. Google treats redirects and rel="canonical" as strong signals and sitemap inclusion as a weak one, so keep all three in agreement.
  2. Rendering. Many docs sites are single-page apps. Google can render JavaScript, but its own guide says server-side or pre-rendering is still a good idea because not all bots can run JavaScript. Serve docs as HTML that reads without scripts. If your docs or site run on Next.js, the Next.js technical SEO checklist covers rendering, canonicals and sitemaps in the App Router.
  3. Crawler access. Check that robots.txt lets the AI search crawlers in, not just Googlebot. OpenAI, for example, says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.
  4. llms.txt for docs. The llms.txt proposal says the file is used most heavily for software documentation, where coding agents follow it to find API references and tutorials. Many docs platforms generate one, or you can draft one from your sitemap with the llms.txt generator. Google says an llms.txt file "will neither harm nor help your site's visibility or rankings in Google Search" (Google), so treat it as a help for agents, not a ranking factor. What is llms.txt covers the format.
  5. Changelogs. Give each release its own page with a date and a plain title, so a question about a feature can find the release that added it.

Most docs problems are technical, and most are cheap to fix once found. These are the checks we run first. The wider list is on technical SEO.

Comparison and integration pages

  1. Comparisons. One fair page per alternative buyers name, with a feature table, where each tool fits and how to migrate. How to write SaaS comparison pages has the structure.
  2. Integrations and frameworks. One page per framework, language or platform you support, with install steps and a working example. These pages answer "does X work with Y" for people and for agents.
  3. Lists you are not on. Check which pages the engines quote for "best tools" questions in your category. If they are third-party lists, getting a fair mention on them is part of the work. Citations covers how we find those pages.

Developers compare tools before they adopt one, and they search for the pair: your tool with their framework, or your tool against the one they use now.

Getting cited in coding assistants' answers

A coding assistant with web access answers from pages it can fetch and read. Three things help it use yours: docs it is allowed to crawl, pages that give the answer near the top with a working code sample, and one current page per topic rather than near-copies across versions.

There is no separate trick for AI. Google's AI optimization guide tells site owners to focus on unique, expert-led content, and says that for Google Search they can ignore tactics like chunking content or adding AI text files.

To see whether it works, track a fixed set of developer questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features and count how often your tool is named. The method is on AI search.

How Ignura fits devtools

Ignura is a GEO and SEO agency for B2B SaaS and devtools. For a devtool we audit the docs site, build comparison and integration pages, write content and track how often AI answers name your tool. What it costs is on pricing.

Questions

What is SEO for developer tools?

It is making your docs, guides, comparisons and integration pages easy to find on Google and easy for AI assistants to read and quote. For most devtools the docs answer more search questions than the landing pages do.

Should old docs versions be indexed?

Keep versions that really differ indexable. Where an old version repeats the current page, point its canonical at the current page, and keep sitemaps and redirects in agreement with it.

Does a devtool need llms.txt?

It is optional and cheap. The proposal says it is used most heavily for software docs, where coding agents follow it to find API references. Google's AI optimization guide says an llms.txt file "will neither harm nor help your site's visibility or rankings in Google Search".

Can AI crawlers read a JavaScript docs site?

Do not count on it. Google renders JavaScript, but says server-side or pre-rendering is still a good idea because not all bots can run JavaScript. Serve docs as HTML that reads without scripts.

How do we get our tool named by coding assistants?

Let the AI search crawlers in, answer each question on one current page with working code, and publish fair comparison and integration pages. Then track a fixed set of developer questions to see how often your tool is named.
