A backlink is a link from another site to yours. A brand mention is your name on another page, with or without a link. Google has documented how it uses links, but has not said unlinked mentions are a ranking factor, while AI answers name the brands that appear on the pages they read, so a SaaS startup should earn both.
The rest of this post separates what the search engines have written down from what people guess, then shows how to find and earn mentions with free tools.
In short
- Backlink: an HTML link from another site to yours. Google uses links to find pages and as a signal of relevance.
- Brand mention: your company or product named on a page. It may or may not link to you.
- Google has not said that unlinked mentions are a ranking factor. Treat any claim that they are as a guess.
- AI answers are written from web pages. If the pages about your category name you, answers can name you.
- Google also warns that “seeking inauthentic ‘mentions’” isn’t as helpful as it might seem.
- Find unlinked mentions with Google search operators and Google Alerts. Ask for a link only when it helps the reader.
What counts as a backlink and what counts as a mention
For Google, a link is a specific thing. Its link guide says that, generally, Google “can only crawl your link if it’s an <a> HTML element” with an href attribute (Google). Links can also carry rel="nofollow", rel="sponsored" or rel="ugc", which tell Google how the site relates to the page it links to.
A mention is anything else that names you: a line in a “best tools” list, a Reddit thread, a podcast transcript, a review, a partner page or a newsletter. Many mentions have no link at all.
What Google says about links, and what it has not said about mentions
Google’s documentation on links is clear. Google “uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl” (Google). Its guide to how Search works describes discovery the same way: some pages “are discovered when Google extracts a link from a known page to a new page” (Google).
On mentions, Google has published nothing that says an unlinked brand name on another site helps you rank. You will find posts that say it does, but they can’t point to Google’s documentation for it. Until Google says otherwise, plan as if unlinked mentions do not move your rankings directly.
What Google has said is about AI features. Its guide to generative AI search says its AI features “can show what’s being said about products and services across the web, including in blogs, videos, and forum discussions” (Google). The same guide adds that “seeking inauthentic ‘mentions’ across the web isn’t as helpful as it might seem”, because its core systems focus on high-quality content and other systems block spam.
Why mentions matter for AI answers
ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google’s AI features find web pages and write an answer from them. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot “is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features” (OpenAI), and Perplexity says PerplexityBot “is designed to surface and link websites in search results” (Perplexity). When those pages compare tools in your category, the tools they name are the tools the answer can name.
The research that coined the term GEO points the same way. The paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” by Aggarwal and others built a benchmark of queries and tested changes to the source pages, such as adding citations, quotations or statistics, simplifying the language, and keyword stuffing, then measured how visible each source was in the generated answers (arXiv). Keyword stuffing did not perform well, and the paper found that results varied by domain. It did not test brand mentions or backlinks. What it shows is that answers are built from source pages, and what those pages say shapes what the answer says.
So a mention on a page that answers a buyer’s question can matter for AI answers even when it has no link. Our guide on getting cited in AI answers covers the full method, and getting recommended by ChatGPT covers product recommendations.
Your own site still counts. If AI crawlers can’t read your pages, the mentions on other sites carry the whole load. Check your robots.txt with our AI crawler checker.
Where SaaS mentions come from
- Comparison and “best X” lists. The pages buyers read when choosing. Ask to be considered, with a short, honest note on who you are for.
- Reddit and forums. Answer real questions where your product is relevant, and say that you work on it.
- Podcasts and founder interviews. Episode notes and transcripts put your name on a page about your topic.
- Directories and review sites. The ones your buyers actually use, with a complete, accurate listing.
- Partner and integration pages. If you integrate with a tool, ask to be listed on its integrations page.
None of these need payment. A paid placement is fine as advertising, but Google asks for links in paid placements to carry rel="sponsored" (Google).
How to find unlinked mentions for free
Search operators. Search for your brand in quotes and leave out your own site, for example "yourproduct" -site:yourproduct.com. Google’s search operators help explains quotes for exact matches and the minus sign for leaving things out. Add a category word if your name is a common word.
Google Alerts. Google Alerts emails you when new pages match a search. Set one for your brand in quotes, one for each product name, and one for each competitor, so you see the lists and threads where your category comes up.
When to ask for a link. Ask when a link would help the reader: the page names your product and a reader would want to try it or read your docs. Thank the writer, point to the exact page, and accept no as an answer. Don’t ask for keyword anchors. Google names optimized anchors in articles and guest posts as link spam (Google).
How to check whether AI answers name you
Write the questions a buyer would ask before choosing a tool in your category, run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google on the same day each week, and note who gets named and which pages get cited. Our guide to tracking AI visibility covers the set-up. The cited pages are your best list of where to earn the next mention.
FAQ
Are brand mentions better than backlinks?
They do different jobs. Links are documented by Google as a way it finds and judges pages. Mentions on the pages AI answers read can get you named in those answers. A SaaS startup needs both.
Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?
Google has not said they do. Plan as if unlinked mentions do not affect rankings directly, and value them for referral traffic, trust and AI answers.
How do I find unlinked mentions of my brand for free?
Search Google for your brand in quotes with your own site excluded, and set Google Alerts for your brand, product names and competitors.
Do brand mentions help you show up in ChatGPT?
They can. ChatGPT search finds web pages and answers from them, so being named on the pages that cover your category gives it a reason to name you. No AI company has published how it weighs mentions.
Should I ask for a link every time I’m mentioned?
No. Ask when a link would help the reader, such as a list that names your product without linking it. Never ask for keyword-rich anchors.
