App icon sizes for iOS and Android in 2026 (and why App Store Connect rejects yours)
the short version
- Make one 1024 × 1024 px PNG with square corners and no transparency. That’s the App Store icon, and recent Xcode versions can build every smaller iOS size from it.
- Google Play wants a 512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG up to 1 MB. Android launcher icons run from 48 to 192 px.
- Most App Store Connect rejections come from an alpha channel or the wrong dimensions. Don’t round the corners yourself.

Make one 1024 × 1024 px PNG with square corners and no transparency. That’s your App Store icon, and recent versions of Xcode can generate every smaller iOS size from it. For Google Play, upload a 512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG up to 1 MB. Android launcher icons run from 48 px to 192 px.
If you’d rather not export them by hand, the free app icon size generator takes one square image and gives you a zip with every size below. It also previews your icon with the iOS mask, on a home screen at real size, and in a browser tab.
iOS and iPadOS icon sizes
| Where | Pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | 1024 × 1024 | PNG, opaque, square corners. Apple rounds it. |
| iPhone | 180, 120, 87, 80, 60, 58, 40 | Home screen is 180 (@3x) and 120 (@2x). The rest are Spotlight, Settings and notifications. |
| iPad | 167, 152, 80, 76, 58, 40, 29, 20 | Home screen is 167 on iPad Pro, 152 on other iPads. |
Apple’s guidance is in the Human Interface Guidelines on app icons. If you use a single-size asset in Xcode, the 1024 px image is all you supply.
Android and Google Play icon sizes
| Where | Pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play listing | 512 × 512 | 32-bit PNG, up to 1 MB, full square. |
| Launcher (mdpi to xxxhdpi) | 48, 72, 96, 144, 192 | Used on the device itself. |
| Adaptive icon layers | 108, 162, 216, 324, 432 | Foreground and background layers, Android 8 and later. |
Google’s spec for the store icon is in the Play Console graphic assets guide. The store icon doesn’t replace your launcher icon, so you need both.
Web icon sizes
If your app has a website or a PWA, you’ll want 16 and 32 px favicons, a 180 px apple-touch-icon, and 192 and 512 px icons for the web manifest. The generator includes these in the same zip.
Why App Store Connect rejects your icon
Usually it comes down to an alpha channel. The App Store icon has to be fully opaque, and a PNG exported from a design tool often carries transparency even when it looks solid. The generator fills any transparent areas with a background colour you pick and saves the iOS sizes without alpha.
The other usual culprit is the wrong dimensions, like a 1000 px export or a non-square crop.
Should you round the corners yourself?
No. Upload a full square. iOS and Google Play both apply their own masks, and pre-rounded corners leave a thin edge of the wrong colour once the system mask goes on top. Keep important detail away from the corners so the mask doesn’t clip it.
A quick test for a good icon
Correct sizes get you through review. Whether anyone taps the icon is a design question. Two quick checks:
- Shrink it. Look at it at 60 px next to other apps. If you can’t tell what it is, simplify.
- One idea. A single shape or symbol on a clear background beats a tiny illustration with five things in it.
The icon also has to agree with your first screenshot, which is one of the ten things we check in every screenshot set.
