TikTok marketing for apps: a practical playbook for founders

the short version

  • TikTok marketing for apps works best when you post the problem, not the product.
  • Make short videos about the moment your user feels stuck, show the app fixing it in a few seconds, and post often enough to learn which hooks land.
  • Then put your best organic videos in front of more people with creators or paid boosts.
  • Founder-run accounts and creator (UGC) videos usually feel more native than polished ads, and on TikTok that matters.

TikTok marketing for apps works best when you post the problem, not the product. Make short videos about the moment your user feels stuck, show the app fixing it in a few seconds, and post often enough to learn which hooks land. Then put your best organic videos in front of more people with creators or paid boosts. Founder-run accounts and creator (UGC) videos usually feel more native than polished ads, and on TikTok that matters.

Why TikTok suits app launches

Consumer apps are easy to show on a phone screen, and TikTok is watched on phones. One video can show the whole loop: problem, tap, result. The For You feed also shows new accounts’ videos to people who don’t follow them, so a brand-new app can be discovered without an existing audience. That makes TikTok a reasonable testing ground before launch, too.

Step 1: Pick your three formats

Don’t make every video from scratch. Choose three repeatable formats and rotate them.

The problem skit

A short scene of the annoying moment, then the app solving it. It works for anything with a relatable pain.

The “I built this” founder video

You, on camera, saying what you built and why, with the screen shown. It’s simple and honest, and it builds a following around the person.

The tutorial or hack

“How I [do the thing] in 10 seconds.” It’s useful on its own, so it gets saved and shared, and the app is simply the tool.

Step 2: Write hooks before scripts

The first second or two decides whether anyone watches. Write five hooks for every idea and film the best two. Good hooks name a person or a pain: “If you always forget to…”, “POV: your group chat…”, “I was tired of…”. Put the hook on screen as text as well as saying it, because many people watch with the sound off.

Step 3: Film it simply

  1. Film vertical, on a phone, in good light.
  2. Record the app’s screen with clean demo data, and keep taps slow enough to follow.
  3. Cut hard. No intros and no logo stings.
  4. Add captions to everything.
  5. End on the result, not a sales line.

Native-looking videos tend to fit the feed better than studio-polished ones. That doesn’t mean sloppy. It means it looks like a person made it.

Step 4: Post on a rhythm and keep notes

Pick a pace you can keep for a month. For each video, log the format, the hook, the watch-through and whether anyone visited your link. After a few weeks, double down on what’s working and drop what isn’t.

Put one link in your bio: the waitlist before launch, the App Store link after. Business accounts can add a link in the bio. TikTok explains the options in its Business Center help.

Step 5: Bring in creators (UGC)

Once you know which angle works, creators can multiply it. Brief them on the person, the feeling and the hero moment, not a word-for-word script. Let them say it their way. Ask for raw files and usage rights for ads up front, in writing.

If a creator mentions your app in exchange for payment or a free product, it has to be disclosed. TikTok has a content disclosure setting for this, and in the UK the ASA and CMA publish an influencer’s guide to making clear that ads are ads.

Step 6: Boost what already works with Spark Ads

Spark Ads let you run an existing organic post, yours or a creator’s with their permission, as an ad. It keeps the original handle and engagement, so it still looks like a TikTok rather than a banner. Only boost videos that already did well organically. Paid spend makes a good video reach further, but it rarely rescues a weak one.

Step 7: Measure what matters

Views are a weak signal on their own. For an app, watch:

  • Watch-through in the first few seconds (is the hook working?)
  • Profile visits and link clicks (is anyone curious?)
  • Waitlist sign-ups or installs in the days after a post
  • Comments that repeat the problem back, which tells you the angle landed

For installs, TikTok’s ads tools support app attribution through mobile measurement partners. See TikTok’s app campaign help before you spend.

Common mistakes

  • Posting the App Store trailer. It reads like an ad and gets scrolled past.
  • Too many features in one video. One problem, one fix.
  • Giving up after a handful of posts. The early posts are how you learn.
  • Unlabelled paid creator posts. It’s a compliance risk and a trust risk.

FAQ

Is TikTok good for marketing apps?

For many consumer apps, yes. The app can be shown on the same screen people are watching, and new accounts can reach non-followers. It’s less suited to complex B2B tools, where a demo needs more time.

Should I post as the app or as the founder?

Both can work. Founder accounts often feel more personal and are easier to keep up. Brand accounts suit apps with a strong character or mascot.

How much does UGC cost for an app?

It depends on the creators and the usage rights. At Ignura, a UGC batch starts at £3,000, including briefs, creators and edits.

Do I need TikTok ads?

Not to start. Learn which videos work organically first, then use Spark Ads to push the winners further.

How long should an app TikTok be?

Long enough to show the problem and the fix, and no longer. Many good app videos are well under a minute.
