In short

Not a trick. Pages it can quote.

Perplexity answers from the pages it can reach. Every week, our AI checks which ones it cites. You approve what changes.

A buyer asks Perplexity a question. It searches the web, reads the pages it can reach and links the ones it uses.
  1. The question

  2. The search

If PerplexityBot is blocked, or no page answers the question, it cites someone else.

  3. The sources

  4. The citation

Which one sounds like yours?

What founders bring us: We log every source it cites for your questions. We check robots.txt and the firewall. We check it against Perplexity's published IPs. We put it in the first lines. We don't buy placements. We give AI referrals their own channel.

How Perplexity picks its sources

Perplexity's help center says it searches the web in real time to answer a question, and that each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources. So the work is getting your pages into the set it can reach, then making them the clearest answer in that set.

Perplexity documents two agents. PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results, and Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity-User visits a page when someone asks a question, and may link that page in the answer. Perplexity says it is not used for web crawling or training, and that because a user asked for the fetch, it generally ignores robots.txt rules.

If you want the steps to do this yourself, read how to get cited by Perplexity. This page is about the work when we do it for you. For the same work on ChatGPT and Gemini, see ChatGPT SEO and Gemini SEO.

What we check first

  1. robots.txt. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt so your site can appear in its search results, and says changes can take up to 24 hours to show. We check the rules for both agents on every subdomain that serves pages buyers read. The free AI crawler checker shows what your robots.txt allows today.
  2. Firewall and CDN. A robots.txt allow does nothing if Cloudflare, AWS WAF or another firewall blocks the request first. Perplexity publishes the IP ranges for both agents (perplexitybot.json and perplexity-user.json) and suggests allow rules that match both the user agent and those IPs. We check your rules against the current lists.
  3. Pages that read without JavaScript. We fetch your key pages as plain HTML and check that the answer is in the text, not only in a script. The wider list is on technical SEO.
  4. An answer in the first lines. For each buyer question we check whether one of your pages answers it near the top, in plain words, with the facts a reader would want to quote.

Which crawlers to allow and which to block is a choice, and AI crawlers in robots.txt walks through it.

Getting onto the pages Perplexity reads

Perplexity cites pages from across the web, not just your own site. For a "which tool should I use" question, the sources it links are often comparisons, lists and reviews written by someone else. Our AI finds the pages Perplexity cites for your buyer questions. We fix the listings you control first, then ask the authors of the rest to take a fair look at you. The work is the same as on citations, with Perplexity's answers as the list to work from.

On your own site, we draft the pages those questions need, such as a comparison, a use case or a docs page, and you approve each one before it goes live.

How we track it

We agree a fixed set of buyer questions with you and ask Perplexity the same questions every week. For each answer we log whether you are cited, which of your pages it links and which other sources it uses. Answers vary between runs, so we read the trend across weeks, not a single answer. The method is the one on AI search.

Visits from Perplexity answers can show up as referrals in your analytics. We give AI referrals their own channel so you can see what they send.

What we won't do

We don't pay for placements, post fake threads or reviews, or buy links. We don't pay Perplexity or publishers to list you.

How to start

Every engagement starts with a free Growth Check: we look at your crawler access and how Perplexity answers a few of your buyer questions today. What the work costs is on pricing.

Questions

Is Perplexity SEO different from Google SEO?

Most of the groundwork is the same: pages that crawlers can reach and that answer the question clearly. The differences are the crawler (PerplexityBot, not Googlebot), the firewall rules for Perplexity's published IP ranges, and how you measure it, which is by asking Perplexity your buyer questions and logging the citations.

If I block PerplexityBot, can Perplexity still cite me?

Perplexity says PerplexityBot is what surfaces and links sites in its search results, and recommends allowing it if you want to appear there. Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when someone asks, generally ignores robots.txt. If you want to be cited, allow PerplexityBot.

Does Perplexity read llms.txt?

Perplexity publishes an llms.txt for its own developer docs. We have not found a statement from Perplexity that llms.txt affects which sources it cites in answers, so we treat it as optional. You can draft one with the llms.txt generator.

How soon will Perplexity cite us?

We won't give you a date. It depends on whether Perplexity can reach your pages, whether one of them answers the question better than the sources it already cites, and how often those sources change. Access fixes come first, and Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to show.

Do you pay Perplexity or publishers to get us listed?

No. We don't buy placements, links or reviews. We fix your own pages and listings, and ask the authors of cited pages to review you on the merits.

Does Perplexity use my content to train its models?

Perplexity says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models, and that Perplexity-User is not used to collect content for training. Its crawler page is the source to check, since policies can change.
